Spring is here! Hmm…well it is!  Please join us and your fellow volunteers for a “welcome back” gathering to catch up and discuss plans for the upcoming farm season. There is a lot to do and a lot of fun to be had! 

We’ll be serving a light breakfast and refreshments to welcome you back too!

We’ve made some enhancements to our volunteer program to improve your volunteer experience. We’ll fill you in at this “welcome-back” event. 

Of course, there’s still many of the same  activities including field work, educational activities, and fundraising events, so much of which will be much more successful if you join us!  We’re also using biodynamic farming principles this year, so there’s lot of new farming techniques to learn and apply.

As you know, the farm depends on volunteers…please try to join us as we start the new farm year!

Seeking Part Time – Education Department Coordinator

 

Crossroads Farm seeks an Education Department Coordinator. This person will be active in every aspect of the Crossroads Farm Education Program and reports to the Education Co-directors.

Job Summary

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Schedule and staff school trips (reviewed by Education Co- directors)
  • Use Google calendar for scheduling and transfer to the Softwhite system for data.
  • Keep track of all education registrations and contracts
  • Arrange meetings for education team
  • Learn about the “field” organic and biodynamic farming and gardening, farm-based education
  • Through active outreach, solicit and build  relationships with schools, girls scouts, boy scouts, youth groups and other community groups to increase bookings
  • Develop adult and family oriented education opportunities
  • Coordinate Summer Sunshine Days
  • Help care for the Teaching Garden
  • Work under and learn from education gardeners and Field Manager
  • Work with Adelphi interns
  • Help out (seeding, harvesting, etc.) wherever there is an immediate need if education work is completed.

 

Skills:

  • Effective educator who enthusiastically engages  students in experiential learning
  • Organizational skills to coordinate and plan educational experiences
  • Good communication skills for telephone, email, and office interaction.
  • Creative graphic arts skills for making fliers, website entries, invoices.
  • Photographic skills to account for education  activities both on and off the farm

 

Education degree and experience preferred, but not required.

9 months (March- November 2018), 20 hours a week on site.

Volunteer Orientations for the Spring Season

Sat. April 14th and Sun. June 3rd

 

 

 

Want to get involved?  Want to make a difference at the farm and in your community?  We have a vibrant and well organized volunteer program.  Maybe this is the year for you to get your hands in the dirt and to help sustain this unique and exciting project.  Without volunteers, we couldn’t get all the work done.  We are truly a community effort! We will be enhancing our volunteer program to increase your knowledge of farming. We’ll also teach you some biodynamic principles to use on the farm and apply at your homestead.

Two orientation dates have been set up for the Spring season:  Sat., April 14th and Sun, June 3rd at 10:30 AM.   At these orientations you will learn about the farm and the different activities and opportunities you can participate in.  Please click the link below to sign up.

We are seeking a farmhand to assist with field and greenhouse work. Experience in farming, horticulture, or environmental sciences is a plus, but willingness to work hard, take direction, and learn from our farm managers is essential.

Position:             Farmhand – (Full-time –Seasonal – March 2018 through Nov. 2018 – 5 Day Weekly Rotational Schedule)

Reports To:       Farm Managers

 

Job Summary

 

Works under the direction of the Farm Managers in the day to day farm operations with a concentration on field preparation, cultivation, machine maintenance in accordance with NOFA-NY organic farming guidelines. The Farmhand takes direction from the Farm Managers.

 

Job Responsibilities

1.      Farm Responsibilities

 

  • Seeds and grows in Crossroads Farm’s greenhouse.
  • Sows seeds directly in the fields.
  • Assists with the maintenance of perennial beds (raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, herbs), the Teaching Garden, and the apple and pear orchard. This includes sowing seeds, weeding, transplanting, pest control and harvesting.
  • Informs Farm Managers of crop and field progress and any issues.
  • Performs temperature logging of off-site compost used at Crossroads farm per NOFA requirements.
  • Willingness to learn and employ biodynamic principles.
  • Prepares and applies compost, cover crop and crop rotation plans.
  • Plows and prepares fields.
  • Operates tractors, tractor-drawn machinery, hog brushes, and other machinery to maintain the farm and fields.
  • Able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Transplants seedlings in a timely manner.
  • Uses appropriate action to control pests and weeds in the fields.
  • Irrigates and cultivates crops.
  • Harvests vegetables, herbs, berries and fruit in a timely manner.
  • Repairs, maintains and stores all necessary farm equipment.
  • Performs record keeping tasks related to the farm field and greenhouse operation.
  • Must have valid drivers license

 

2. Development Responsibilities

 

  1. Keep abreast of organic farming techniques, local sourcing and sustainable food practices by attending conferences/workshops and reading books and journals available in the farm library.
  2. The Farm Managers will institute and maintain a system for providing feedback on the job responsibilities and performance of the Farmhand.
  3. Create and implement a plan for your own growth and development.

Groundhog Day Breakfast at Crossroads Farm on Friday, Feb. 2nd at 7:15 AM

Will Malverne Mel see his shadow? Are we in for a long winter, or is spring just around the corner?

Please join us at Crossroads Farm on Friday, February 2nd directly after the ceremony at the Malverne gazebo, for a light breakfast of bagels and breakfast pastries. We’ll also have coffee from Kookaburra Coffee Company, opening very soon in Malverne.

We want to extend a warm thank you to Danny’s Bagels and Kookaburra Coffee Company for donating to the breakfast.

Some of our farm staff will also be here, so please feel free to ask about the upcoming season!


Attention Landscapers and Home Gardeners: We Have Compost!

We produce high-quality organic compost at Crossroads Farm in conjuction with the New York Equestrian Center.

We Need Your Help: Crossroads Farm’s Challenge Grant Ends December 31, 2017!
 
 

We need your support today to operate Crossroads Farm tomorrow!

Crossroads Farm is very fortunate to have been offered a $35,000 challenge grant from an anonymous donor. It must be matched by 12/31/2017.  In other words, every dollar you donate to this effort will be matched dollar for dollar up to $35,000 – whatever you give will be doubled. Anything we raise above our $70,000 goal will be dedicated to our 2018 operating budget.  

We receive no public funding and depend on private contributions to meet the farm’s $300,000 annual operating budget.  Having raised about $230,000 to date, we need your help to raise the $70,000 balance.
