Together  We Grow – Hops!

On June 3rd, Lithology Brewing Co. of Farmingdale planted hops at the farm with the help of Crossroads volunteers and staff.

5 varieties of hops were planted at the southeast corner of the farm: Cascade, Centennial, Tettnanger, Willamette, and Kent Golding. Hops and their varieties are used in the brewing process to create different flavor profiles for beers.

While the hops will take 2-3 years to reach the maturity needed for brewing, they will produce large vines to view this summer. Upon harvesting, they will be used within a 24-hour period in what is known as a “wet-hopped” beer, as well as dried for future use.

Lithology Brewing is licensed as a New York State Farm Brewery, which means they are required to use a percentage of New York-grown hops, grain, and other ingredients. New York State was once the largest hop-producing region in the world. Governor Andrew Cuomo initiated the farm brewery license to help reestablish a once vibrant hop and barley economy and encourage collaboration between brewers and farmers.

Going one step further, Lithology Brewing has established a brewery-farm partnership with Crossroads to help bring hyper-local ingredients to their beers.

Volunteer opportunities maintaining the hops will be available in the summer and fall. Look out for more information!
